Welcome to the Saltwaterflies.com Fly Tying Catalog, sponsored by Tight Lines. We are committed to bringing you the finest materials for tying saltwater flies, and we are proud of our high quality products and fast, friendly service. If you have any questions regarding the selection of saltwater fly tying materials, give us a shout! We have organized our fly tying catalog into two pages - Page 1 features all of the Saltwater Hooks, Threads, Eyes, Tools, and Adhesives that we carry, and Page 2 features all other fly tying items. Please be patient and allow each page to load completely the first time you access it - it may take a few seconds with a high speed connection.
All of our fly tying materials are selected for quality and value. These are the same materials that are used to produce many of the flies that you see in the pages of Saltwaterflies.Com. Although many of these materials are also useful for freshwater tiers, we feel that this is the first catalog designed specifically with the saltwater tier in mind.
We are adding photos of our products to the catalog pages as often as we can. Items with a blue text link shown in the description, or a blue dot feature a photo - click on the links and blue dots for related photos. We welcome your comments and suggestions about these pages. View the catalog from start to finish to see all of the products. The navigation bar shown below will quickly take to you specific products or groups of products. The navigation bars work best if you allow the page to load fully once before clicking on links within the bar. For ease of surfing, if you click on an "Add to Cart" link, use the "Back" button on your browser to return to the part of the page you were looking at.
This page (Page 1) contains all of our saltwater fly Hooks, Tying Thread, Eyes, Tools, and Adhesives.
Go directly to Page 2 (Everything but
Hooks, Thread, Eyes, Tools, and Adhesives).
Advanced Navigation Hints for Windows users: Use the "Home" button on your keyboard to return to the top of the page at any time. Use Ctl+F to Find items you are looking for (Press the Ctrl and "F" keys at the same time, then enter any keyword that you like).

Varivas 2600 ST-V Series hooks: We first heard about these excellent hooks from the late Bob Popovics...These
Varivas 2600 series hooks replace the "990S" series hooks that were previously available - the 2600 series hooks are exactly the same as the Varivas 990 series hooks; the only thing
that has changed is the style number. Designed by IGFA fly rod world record holding angler
Eizo Maruhashi, with high-power carbon used for extra strength - you can hook and land large
hard-fighting fish like tarpon and sailfish. The hook gap on these hooks is sized slightly larger than traditional hooks; hook gap on a #4 is comparable to a #2 on traditional styles.
These hooks are the favorite hooks of many
famous saltwater fly anglers and tiers - and for good reason - these Japanese made hooks
represent the ultimate in strength and sharpness.

Varivas 2600 V Carbon This hook replaces the original 990 Carbon (990C)- the penetrating power of this hook is awesome - this is one of the top hook styles for tarpon. T. Patrick Ford Jr., chairman of the Golden Fly Invitational Tarpon Tournament reported: "During the (Golden Fly) tournament, I had eight bites and caught seven fish which is very rare in tarpon fishing. Usually, landing one in ten is a good ratio." This style in the #1 & #1/0 is our favorite for small Toad flies. |

Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap A more recent issue from Gamakatsu is the Finesse Wide Gap hook. This short-shank, light wire hook with oversize gap is an excellent choice for situations where a strong, lightweight hook is required. Many tiers have been requesting this hook for use in shallow water and backcountry situations. Click the hook photo to see a separate size reference photo. A new weedless version is also available - this hook offers one of the easiest ways to tie a weedless fly for snook, largemouth bass, or any other species that lives in the snags. We have been field testing these weedless hooks for several years now, and they work very, very well. Click here for a photo of the weedless Finesse hook. |

Gamakatsu SL45 Bonefish Hook Another recent innovation from Gamakatsu is the SL45 bonefish fly hook. Straight eye, forged, sproat bend, with a black finish, the SL12 is nicely balanced for bonefish flies. Gamakatsu is listing this as a "2x strong" hook, but we suggest caution if you plan to be fishing over rocky bottoms, in mangroves, or when fishing for very large bones - this is still a light wire hook when compared to traditional styles. We also love this hook for many "warmwater" flies for largemouth bass and carp. This hook is super sharp. Per pack quantities: #10: 15/pack; #8-#4: 12/pack. All sizes $4.99/pack. |

Gamakatsu Live Bait (Light Wire) with Ring: Gamakatsu's Live Bait Light Wire with Ring is an excellent choice for tube flies. To rig these for a tube fly, just double the end of the tippet with a surgeon's loop, insert the loop through the tube, then loop-to-loop onto the ring of these hooks. These hooks feature a solid ring welded to the eye (not a split ring). No snelling, and the doubled line helps prevent chafe inside the tube when landing tough fish. We have been using these hooks successfully now for years on tubes for striped bass, bonito and little tunny, and they are far and away our first choice now for small tube flies. Slightly offset bend hooks and holds fish well. For really tough fish, try the Live Bait with Ring shown below which features a heavy wire size. All sizes $6.95/pack. |

We offer several kinds of thread for different applications.
Ultra Thread is a popular favorite - the most popular size of
this thread (UTC 140) is thinner than the Danville "Flat Waxed Nylon".
Regarding the "Denier" sizes: the larger the number, the
thicker the thread, so 140 denier is thicker than 70 denier.
"GSP" or Gel-spun polyethylene is super strong stuff like the earlier
kevlar threads - this is the same material
as the popular modern gel-spun fly line backings and spinning lines.
Danville's Flymaster 6/0 is a small, fine, 70 Denier size traditional thread for precision tying. Fine thread makes for more evenly finished heads, but it breaks more easily than heavier threads.
Danville's "Flymaster Plus" threads are excellent - the 140 Denier is a top choice for most general work - the 210 Denier is a heavy thread used for spinning hair and anywhere thread buildup is not a consideration. The 210 Denier used to be labelled as size "A" or "3/0" but is now labelled as 210 Denier. The thread itself has not changed.
Danville's Flat Waxed Nylon is good for tiers who need a strong thread without too much buildup. This thread lies flat, and is strong enough for spinning hair, or tying large flies. 210 Denier.
Uni Thread's "Big Fly" thread is a very large, strong thread for heavy tying jobs or very large flies.
Monofilament thread is typically used where it will appear invisible under an epoxy coating.
If you need a better bobbin for fly tying, please see info on the Supreme Ceramic Bobbin.

Brass Eyes: This style of lead eyes features the traditional "Hour Glass" shape, but the eyes are made of brass instead of lead. Often referred to as "Hour Glass Brass Eyes"... also known as "Dazl Eyes". Environmentally friendly! Since each set of eyes are machined instead of molded, these eyes are perfectly shaped... We have come to prefer this style for many of our bonefish flies & Clouser styles, as they are more durable, and easier to attach to the hook. If you are trying to match a specific size, please refer to the diameter of the eye face... the sizes and their specific measurements are listed below. 20 per pack. Tungsten Predator Eyes : These new "Predator Eyes" from Hareline Dubbin represent a big leap forward in lead eyes design. Made from tungsten, they are heavier and more durable than eyes made from lead, and they are non-toxic. The best thing about these eyes, however, is the unique "offset" design - click this link to see a Closeup. The eyes are offset from the crossbar that is used to tie them in to the fly. This allows the tier to better control the weighting of the fly - the offset allows the tier to attach the eyes so that the eyeface will be centered on the hook shank, for a hook-down attitude in the water, or with the eyeface further above the hook shank, which will cause the fly to flip hook point up, as is traditional for a Clouser Minnow. These eyes flip Clousers far better than other styles due to this offset, and the greater weight of the tungsten - they are slightly more expensive than other styles, but they are worth it for this fact alone. The color of the metal is Silver - colors shown are the color of the eyeface. Size Small are ideal on a #4 standard saltwater fly hook, size Medium are best on a #2 hook, but there is some flexibility with this of course. 10 per pack - $7.49/pack. |

Real Eyes Plus: Real Eyes Plus by Spirit River have become one of the most widely used eye styles for Clouser Minnows, etc. These eyes feature an enamel eye mounted on the side of the eye.... with Real Eyes Plus you can forget about painting on eyes or sticking on adhesive eyes - these eyes are ready to go without further fiddling. The first color refers to the color of the metal, the second to the iris of the eye (pupil is black) - click on the text heading to view photo. If you are making clousers or bonefish flies, the 5/32" size is about right on a #4 standard saltwater hook; the 3/16" is good on a #2. The 7/32" is good on a #1 or #1/0; the 1/4" for hook sizes #2/0 and larger. Of course there's a little flexibility with those guidelines. 15 per pack. All sizes $6.99/pack. |

The smallest sizes can be used to good effect on bonefish flies. The 5/32" size is about right on a #4 or #2 standard saltwater fly hook; the 3/16" size will go nicely on a #1 or #1/0. For hooks larger than that - it's up to you! The larger sizes like the 1/4" and 5/16" are super heavy - use these for wreck fishing, offshore clouser types, etc. Per pack quantities: All sizes 12 per pack, except 5/16" (10 per pack). $6.49/pack, except where noted. |

Fish-Skulls: are a really neat way to make baitfish patterns. These heads make cool Baitfish Patterns, Fish-Skull Deceivers, Fish-Skull Bunnies, and more. Some notes according to the manufacturer: Fish-Skulls offer fly fishermen an exciting alternative to using old-style dumbbells or cones to weight their flies. Fish-Skull adds weight to your streamer pattern - they weigh roughly about the same as an equivalent hook size dumbbell. Small skull weighs 0.48 grams (0.17 ounce), Small-Medium is 0.79 grams (0.028 ounces). Medium skull weighs 1.26 grams (0.044 ounces) and Large skull is 2.46 grams (0.087 ounces). 100% lead free metal composite material that is guaranteed to be corrosion free for up to 80 hours in saltwater. The unique design places the center of gravity and 70% of the weight of the Fish-Skull slightly below the hook shank producing a keeling effect similar to a dumbbell, and still allows the fly to be tied in either the hook down or the hook up position if desired. Suggested hook sizes: Small for hook sizes #10, #8, #6, #4 - fits best on #8 or #6. Small-Medium for hook sizes #4, #2, or #1 - fits best on #4 or #2. Medium for hook sizes # 4, #2, #1, #1/0 - fits best of #2 or #1. Large for hook sizes # 1/0, #2/0, #3/0, #4/0 - fits best on #2/0 or #3/0. Fish-Skull has been sized using standard length saltwater hooks as a reference point. However, due to the wide variance in hook sizes and shapes found between the different hook manufacturers, this only provides general guidance to the hook sizes suitable for each size skull. Experiment to find the optimum hook for the particular fly pattern you wish to tie. 3-D eyes are included in the package with the Skulls. All sizes $6.29/pack. We are also offering the Flymen "Articulated Shanks" for making extended bodies & trailers. |

Fly Eyes: Fly Eyes - also called Tab Eyes - are prismatic
adhesive eyes with a little tab one one side. The tab is tied in with thread at the head of
the fly to position the eye. This helps you easily put the eye in the right place, and
keeps the eyes firmly in place for epoxying, and/or makes them much more durable during fishing
if you don't coat them with epoxy. Easy! 48 eyes/pack... $3.99/pack.

Loon UV Fly Finish The Loon UV Fly Finish coatings
are among our favorites when it comes to UV cured coatings. The
"Thick" and "Thin" formulas come in a generous 2 oz size - a larger bottle than many of the UV cured coatings, more convenient and economical for anyone needing to coat a lot of flies- as well as a smaller 1/2 oz bottle.
Also avalable is the "Flow" coating in the 1/2 oz bottle - this thin formula coating is better for nice glossy heads on smaller flies. We also offer the the Loon Infinity Light which features a rechargeable battery and a
high-intensity light (charges with a USB cable, included with the light). Here are photos: Thick 2 oz, Thin 2 oz,
and Flow 1/2 oz, Loon Infinity Light

Z-Poxy 5-Minute Z-Poxy is the choice for fly tiers who want results
fast. This quick set formula can be used without placing flies on an epoxy turner - simply
turn the coated flies in the tying vise for a few minutes until Z-poxy is set up, then
transfer to a safe place for complete curing.
|
Liquid Fusion: Fly tiers have been waiting for a product like this for a long time. Clear, thick formula urethane adhesive coating
can take the place of epoxy in many situations, particularly on fly heads and smaller sized
epoxy flies. Very easy to apply right from the bottle, no mixing, no odor, non-toxic. Consistency is very similar to epoxy, but not sticky. Just place finished fly on a rotating wheel to dry. Complete cure in 24 hours. One way in which Liquid Fusion does
differ from epoxy is that it will shrink somewhat as it cures.
No overseas shipment of this product - sorry.
|
Loon Hard Head Fly Finish: A water-based, polyurethane formula for creating glossy heads and bodies on your favorite fly patterns. One part (no mixing),
low odor, replaces messy epoxies in many applications. Hard Head can be built up in several coats to create a tough, durable finish that looks just like epoxy without the mess and the mixing! |
Dave's Flexament: This thinner-based head cement is an old
favorite among many fly tiers for general purpose use in fly tying. Coat heads & thread
wraps, use on thread between tying steps to add durability to any fly. Note:
Thinner based products like this are restricted from international shipping - please do

Zap Goo: Excellent all purpose adhesive and sealant is the number
one adhesive to use for attaching eyes to your saltwater flies, and is an excellent
product for wader repair. Bonds virtually anything,
remains flexible when cured, this works where others won't! This is the same as the
"Zap A Dap A Goo" product that has been available for many years; the maker has renamed it and priced it more reasonably packaged in a smaller, more convenient size for fly tying.
Note: Thinner based products like this are restricted from international shipping -
please do not order this if you are outside of the United States - thank you!. |
Aquaseal: Permanent, flexible waterproof sealant useful for repairing waders and all types of outdoor equipment. Also produces a clear, tough, flexible coating for fly tying.
