Tying the Extreme Deceiver - Steps 6 to 11

steps 1 to 5 | steps 6 to 11 | steps 12 to finish

The Extreme Deceiver

Step 6: Cut a bundle of chartreuse bucktail about half the thickness of a pencil and secure it on top of the hackles with about ten thread wraps.

This hair should come from the top half of a quality bucktail with long, fine hair. If you have trouble getting the hair to form a neat bundle at the tie-in point, try pinching it with your thumb and forefinger with your free hand while securing it with thread wraps.

The Extreme Deceiver

Step 7: Attach about fifteen strands of chartreuse Krystal Flash on top of the bucktail, using only about five thread wraps to reduce bulk. Trim to the length of the bucktail.

Step 8: Replace the hook in your vise so the hook point is oriented upward – or simply rotate you vise. Cut a bundle of white bucktail about the half the width of a pencil, and attach it opposite the chartreuse bucktail. Like the chartreuse bucktail, this should come from the top half of a qaulity bucktail with long, fine hair.

Step 9: Attach about fifteen strands of Polarflash Mirage Opal and trim to the length of the bucktail. Making sure not to go farther back than previous thread wraps, build a cone of thread that covers all the bucktail and flash at the tie in points. This cone of thread will make tying in other materials much easier.

Step 10: Replace the hook in your vise so the hook point is again oriented down – or simply rotate your vise so the hook is upright. Attach about ten strands of Polarflash Mirage Opal, leaving a small gap between the flash and the last tie-in point.

Step 11: Using the flash like a body braid, make nesting wraps toward the hook eye. Stop the wraps just before the hook eye, leaving about one-eighth of an inch of bare hook shank. Cover this small area with thread wraps.
